The Science of Sound Healing



Science is still catching up to understanding how sound heals, but current research finds strong evidence that sound healing has a wide variety of health benefits. Sound is a form of energy that travels through the air in the form of waves. These waves are measured in hertz (Hz,) with higher frequencies producing higher pitched sounds and lower frequencies producing lower pitched sounds. When sound waves enter the ear, they vibrate the eardrum which sends signals to the brain to interpret the sound.




What is Sound Healing?


Sound Healing also known as Sound Therapy is a practice that uses various sound vibrations to promote physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing. Sound is a powerful force that can affect us in many ways, from the calming sound of the ocean waves to the energizing beat of a drum and everything in between. It slows down your breath rate, heart rate, and even your brainwaves, putting you into an almost trance like state. Healing with sound is an ancient healing art that has been used for thousands of years in various cultures throughout the world to promote health and wellbeing.






Sound Healing can be used to alleviate symptoms of many conditions including, but not limited to anxiety, stress, PTSD, dementia, cancer, behavior and psychological disorders, sleep issues, chronic pain, depression, autism, ADHD, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, mood swings, etc..








How Sound Healing is Practiced:


  • Singing Bowls: Bowls made of metal or crystal that produce a deep resonant sound when struck or played with a mallet. The sound vibrations from the bowls promote harmony, balance, healing and relaxation.

  • Tuning Forks: Small metal forks that produce a specific sound frequency when struck. They are often used to stimulate specific parts of the body such as acupressure points or the chakras.

  • Gongs: large metal discs that produce a very deep resonant sound when struck. the sound vibrations from the gongs are strong and powerful healers

  • Chanting and Mantras: A form of sound therapy that involves repeating a specific sound or phrase. The sound vibrations from the chanting or mantras create vibration healing from the inside out helping to promote calmness and inner peace.

  • Singing or Vocalizing: Using your own voice helps to create different vibrations throughout the body promoting powerful internal healing.

  • Binaural Beats: Sound frequencies that are played in each ear at a slightly different frequency. The brain then creates a third frequency which helps promote healing.


Sound Therapy can be practiced in a group setting or on an individual basis. During a session the therapist will play various sound vibrations often in a specific sequence to promote a specific outcome.
